Eagle Hunter Festival Mongolia - 2017
In the desolate mountainous terrain of western Mongolia live 60 or so remaining traditional eagle hunters. This ancient tradition of training golden eagles to hunt on horseback for foxes and wolves is still part of daily life for these Kazakh eagle hunter families. The hunter takes the young wild eaglet from its nest and trains it whereby a special bond develops between hunter and this bird of prey. The eagle hunters compete at an annual eagle hunter festival around Ulgii in the Altai Mountains. The eagle, when not hunting or training is tethered outside the family ger. Gold medals awarded to the hunter at various Eagle Hunter Festivals are proudly displayed on the walls inside the ger home, alongside wolf pelts and family photographs.
